Why choose laminate flooring?
Here are some of the reasons why people choose laminate flooring:
Laminate flooring is often significantly cheaper than solid wood, engineered wood or stone flooring.
It is resistant to stains and scratches and doesn’t fade when exposed to sunlight making it a great choice for high traffic areas or rooms which are exposed to lots of sunlight.
Most laminate flooring can be used with underfloor heating. It will require the correct sort of underlay in order to transfer the heat efficiently.
It is easy to clean with simple sweeping.
Most laminate flooring comes in planks that can be fitted together easily using a click fitting system. This saves both time and cost when it comes to installation.
The majority of laminate flooring is water resistant with some even being waterproof.
The strong top surface of laminate flooring is tough and durable which means that it acts as a scratch resistant layer. This is particularly well suited to pet owners as it prevents pet claws from scratching or marking the floor.

What to know when choosing laminate flooring
Flooring made of multiple layers
Laminate floors are made up of a number of layers: a particleboard wood base, an image layer and a transparent top layer to give the flooring a protective finish.
These layers combine to give the look of natural floors whilst being easy to clean, scratch resistant and relatively inexpensive.
Not all laminate is equal
There is a wide variety of laminate flooring available. It is particularly important to bear in mind the end use of the room when choosing your flooring as some laminate is designed to be waterproof and suitable for bathrooms, utility rooms and other rooms with high amounts of moisture. Most laminate is water resistant rather than waterproof and could cause problems if used in the wrong rooms.
Laminate vs Vinyl or Lino
It’s easy to get confused between the different sorts of floors available. Whilst it’s easy to understand what a solid wood floor is (solid wood!), laminate, vinyl and lino sometimes seem to be words that are used interchangeably.
Firstly, lino is a composite flooring traditionally made of natural materials including cork dust, wood flour, linseed oil and other natural substances. This was particularly popular in the mid 20th century but has largely been replaced by laminate and vinyl flooring.
Secondly, vinyl is made of layers of synthetic material which make it almost unbeatable if you are looking for a waterproof option.
Finally, laminate’s hard layer is typically made of wooden fibreboard particles that are thick enough to be embossed and look a lot like convincing hard wood. Laminate isn’t as waterproof as vinyl but can be an excellent choice as an alternative to a real wood floor.
Both laminate and vinyl flooring are easy to maintain, durable and easy to install. If you’d like advice on the best one for your needs, please do get in touch.
