Engineered, solid wood and parquet

Engineered wood flooring

Engineered wood flooring is a great choice if you’re looking for wooden flooring and also want underfloor heating. It is often more cost-effective than solid wooden flooring whilst still delivering the beautiful traditional look of wooden flooring.

Solid wood flooring

At First Class Flooring, we can also help you with solid wood flooring if you prefer this totally traditional option. Solid wood allows you to sand and re-finish your flooring multiple times over its lifetime which can allow more wear than other options.

Parquet

Another option you may wish to consider is parquet flooring. This can be made of either solid or engineered wood and offers many of the same advantages as they do but with the distinctive layout made by placing smaller blocks of wood in a geometric layout.

Whatever sort of wooden flooring you are looking for we would be delighted to talk through the available options with you.

What to consider when choosing wooden flooring

Flooring for your lifestyle

In order to choose the best wooden flooring for your lifestyle, we would suggest considering the following questions:

  • Which rooms are you looking at?
  • Will the flooring be in high traffic areas?
  • Would you like underfloor heating?
  • Will the floor be used near water (i.e. in a kitchen or bathroom)?
  • How long would you like the flooring to last?

Some of these questions will naturally lead you to either engineered wood or solid wood; for example if you would like underfloor heating we would rule out solid wood flooring due to the likely fluctuations in temperature and their effect on the wood. On the other hand you may be looking for flooring for a living room that you would like to be able to last for a long time; this can be achieved by repeatedly sanding and refinishing solid wooden flooring.

Why choose wooden flooring?

Wood flooring adds warmth, character and style a period property, a warehouse style build and pretty much anything in between.

Wooden flooring can last a lifetime. Small signs of wear and tear can be dealt with easily and both engineered and solid wood flooring can be sanded and refinished to deal with bigger issues should they arise.

Wooden flooring is sustainable. Both types of wooden flooring are entirely made of wood and therefore sustainable but due to its use of a mix of trees and little associated wastage, engineered wooden flooring is usually the more sustainable of the two. Engineered wooden flooring usually combines a hardwood top layer of up to 6mm on top of an engineered base created from fast-growing poplar, spruce or birch.
